8 1/2 hours of fighting the fire but now the big question is what kind of toxic problems it has created for us in the air. the plume of black smoke could be seen as far away from oakland. it was burning as many as 30,000 plastic bins. the company makes those plastic bins that are used by farmers. firefighters found it extremely hot making this fire a huge challenge for them. investigators say workers at the plant started the fire. >> we have confirmed with the business owners and employees on site that that they did have employees with working with some type of open flame device. i don't have details but probably a blowtorch or welding in that area. >> no major injuries were reported. about 120 firefighters came to help out with this when it reached the sixth alarm. they even received help from travis air force base. they finally stopped putting water on it about 9:30 last night. macro plastics has been here for 20 years and never had a fire like this. 45 workers -- 45 people work here. at this point it's grateful that everyone evacuated safely and everybody is okay. live in fai

on what happened to the man known as brother john. >> reporter: the people who knew him said he has a big heart and they are devastated. >> reporter: gave him fish and french fries. >> reporter: william holloway says the man he had come to know as brother john had just stopped by with a hot meal when somebody drove by in a van and opened fire. >> from that point on he shot three times and then two more shots. >> reporter: you heard five shots? >> five shots. the guy don't even know brother john. this is a random senseless shooting that should have never happened. if it hadn't been for brother john, they would have got shot. >> are you all right? >> yeah, i made it through. >> reporter: holloway says brother john has been bringing him food on the streets of east oakland for about a year, sometimes three days a week. >> he was a nice guy. him and his wife fixed the food at home and bring it out here to feed people. >> reporter: the shooting happened at 12:30 a.m. at 47th and san leandro. oakland police say the original report came into the chp when somebody flagged down an officer to report

.m. this meeting last night came after word of a potential deal and a pretty big deal after word of a potential deal really stole the headlines yesterday afternoon and overnight. this would be, as i said, a pretty big deal. $3 trillion in deficit savings over ten years. and we only have a rough sketch of it. what is interesting, don, as you said, the white house is shooting this down. they say there is no deal. we heard jay carney shoot this down yesterday. the speaker's office is saying there is no deal but we have from congressional sources who are speaking on anonymity there is a framework. at 10:00 a.m. we will detail what the sources are telling us is in this potential agreement. >> only 10 1/2 days. thank you very much. we will be coming back to you throughout the day. >>> among an already crowded field of gop presidential candidates, a new cnn/orc poll suggests that texas governor rick perry may want to throw his hat into the ring too. mr. paul steinhauser joins us live from washington. >> rick perry is thinking about jumping into the white house and could do it. stay tuned on that. the

is opened up. danville, stalled big rig, 680, right lane we do have a bart delay in san francisco peninsula in the eastbound direction of about 15 minutes. >>> we'll check in a little later. fire crews spent nearly all night looking for hot spots in a massive fire at a plastics plant. this morning, the questions are turning to what is left in the air. the fire begin yesterday afternoon at macro plastics in fairfield. amy hollyfield is live where fire officials are just about to give another update. >> we're waiting for that update. right now, take a look behind me. wow, now the sun is up you see the damage that happened here at this plastics manufacturing company, chain link fence is gone. the fire just melted it. this field is blackened. it's burned for about eight and a half hours and firefighters said it was very hot and intense fire. it started at about 1:15 at macro plastics here in fairfield. they say workers accidentally started oors the fire. the fire burned 15,000 to 30,000 plastic bins that creates toxic smoke. the agency calls it the worst smoke you can encounter. residents were

is facing two big issues when it meets tonight, what to do with an expiring moratorium on medical pot clubs. council members could set up rules or ban the establishment. voters approved a state proposition legalizing medical marijuana in 1996 and the city council is slated to approve a $9 million settlement over sewage spills. a group sued over alleged spills caused by decaying pipes. most of the settlement will be used to improve sewer lines. supporters for legalizing recreational marijuana are trying a second time to win over california voters. it got the green light from the state to gather signatures to place the initiative on the ballot. a similar measure was rejected by voters last november. i guess they try, try again. >> it's 5:07 now. time to check in with meteorologist christina loren with a look at our forecast. >> good morning to you. boy, you snuck up on me. low pressure is going to keep things mild for us. and then high pressure starts to change things as we head closer and closer to the weekend. gradually tacking on a couple of degrees each day and we also have the potential

't happen. >> no. and when the markets do open, it will be a big indication of what happened. the dow jones is down to 86 points, to 12,595. that's come down from the earlier drop of 100 points right at the sound of the opening bell. overnight all of the major asian markets closed down. again, they will reopen again. they are definitely looking towards washington, d.c. to see what happened. the biggest loser, the shanghai composite. australia lost 1.5%. japan finished up. the german market has wandered back into positive territory, a few times within the last few hours. the french and british markets remain down from the closing. now, related in all of this cody traders are taking action. crude oil prices fell below $99 but are now offer -- hovering above that point. some credit agencies are warning that they will drop the u.s. rating from aaa to aa in the next couple of days if the uncertainty continues. one commodity benefiting is gold, gold prices are up $16 so far this morning. record prices there. just about 1600 -- $1,618 an ounce. coming up, we'll have more on whether the debt talks

see a lot of the damage behind me in this field a big pile of ash that was once a huge stack of plastic crates and you can see off to the side, still some of the plastic crates that are impacted today. this is what was burning creating a show of fire and concerns for air quality. that fire broke out at around 1:00 yesterday afternoon here at macro plastics. check out this video from failed. it's near travis air force base. the fire was huge with thick, black smoke that could be seen for more than 50 miles away. it was shooting 9,000 feet into the air. the fire fueled by plastic produce crates. a worker accidentally lit one on fire and it took off into a five-acre fire. >> any sense of the temperature that this fire reached? >> close to 1,000, maybe 1500. if you go to the side of the complex where the grass is, you will see the poles, the whole metal fences are bent like straw. >> reporter: so it took firefighters about three hours to get that fire under control. but it wasn't completely out until early into this morning actually. firefighters were still concerned about some h

of highway 237 is back open this morning. yesterday a driver died when a big rig truck slammed into the centerdoid and then caught on fire. this happened on the eastbound lanes of 237 just past the matilda exit. >> reporter: according to the california highway patrol the driver of a big rig truck carrying a load of dirt lost control. witnesses say the truck slam under to the centerdoid. >> that collision overturned the vehicle and trapped the driver of the vehicle and then the big rig caught on fire. >> reporter: the driver unable to escape died before rescue crews could arrive. the truck spilled dirt across the highway. exactly what caused the driver to lose control is still under investigation. no one else was iniered enthe accident and crews were able to open all lanes in both directions. the driver of the truck had not yet been identified. >>> also this morning a young teenager is recovering after being stabbed while walking to a dog park. the victim was with a friend when it happened. the boy suffered injuries to both kidneys. investigators say the three suspects were ar

temperatures in the 80s. they're really not getting involved in this big warm up if you're headed out to santa clara, they're getting in the 90s. but we're getting a lot of fog here. it's shallow but it's moving into parts of the south bay. so fog then sun, cool to mild to nice to warm to hot. depending on where you are in proximity of that fog and coast. it's a cool pattern, inland upper 80s. 90, 95 for those warmest locations unless you're really far away from the coast and maybe a few pushing in a little bit further than that. there are signs that next week another weak little system will come in which will start another cooling trend that won't be until saturday or sunday. 50s in these temps. concord 55. same for napa, san rafael. san francisco, oakland, livermore 58. and high pressure continues, i think it's put on the brakes. i really do. what we had yesterday is taking into today. maybe some tropical clouds coming around that. again it moves into the sierra of southern california. sunny inland, warming ends by friday, maybe even saturday. we'll have to keep an eye to the south. fog some

is on treasure island this morning to talk about another big cat walk is set to go into place. i guess a lot of people are noticing it. >> that is right. you can see it from where we are standing. we have a great view of it from here on treasure island. they are the reddish orange strip. those are the so-called cat walks. cal tran has installed three of them. you can see three of them right there. they are supposed to install the fourth and last one sometime at the end of this month. if we zoom in for you you can see the cat walks are flat. they are like that for a reason. they will have to walk on the strips so they can install the cables for the eastern span suspension bridge. once the cable is up it will be 4,000 above where the cat walks are. that main cable is more than a mile long and made up of thousands of smaller cables but we have been tolds work in stringing that cable is supposed to start later this year. reporting live on treasure island allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. >>> thank you. time now 6:46. san francisco police say they have recovered the gun that is at the center of a

see a big fields of ash now because about five acres worth of plastic bins were burning here last night. if you move to the left, you can see the impact plastic bins. these are the things that burned here. it was all in an outside storage area. no actual buildings caught on fire. when you look at this video, it looks like there's a two-story building on fire. it's really just stacked-up plastic crates, though. the fire broke out around 1:00 yesterday afternoon near travis air force base and the smoke could be seen for 50 miles away, as far as san francisco and sacramento, thick, black smoke. the fire fueled by the plastic produce crates. the theory right now, we haven't got the official cause but the theory is that a worker accidentally lit one of them on fire perhaps as he was doing some sort of welding. it quickly took off into the five acre fire. any sense of the temperatures that this fire reached? >> close to 1,000, maybe 1500. if you go to the sides of this complex where the grass, you will see the pole the whole metal fences and they are been the like straw. >> reporter: i
